Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about how Ciphera works.

Do I need an account to use Ciphera?+

No. Ciphera requires no account, no sign-up, and no email address to create or share a secret. You can start sharing in seconds.

Can Ciphera read my secrets?+

No — and this is not just a policy. Ciphera uses zero-knowledge encryption. Your secret is encrypted in your browser before it leaves your device. The encryption key lives in the URL fragment, which browsers never send to servers. We receive only ciphertext we have no key for. It is mathematically impossible for us to read your data.

What happens when a secret is viewed or expires?+

The moment the view limit is reached or the expiry time passes, the secret is permanently deleted from our servers. There is no recovery, no archive, and no way to retrieve it.

What does 'burn after reading' mean?+

It means a secret is permanently deleted after it is first viewed. You can also set a higher view limit if multiple people need to read it. Setting it to 1 means the first person to open the link will be the last.

Can I set both a view limit and a time limit?+

Yes. Set both and whichever condition is hit first triggers immediate deletion. For example: burn after 3 views or 24 hours — whichever comes first.

Is my file encrypted too?+

Yes. Files are encrypted in your browser before upload. Only the encrypted blob is transmitted — our servers receive opaque ciphertext, not your original file.

What file types and sizes are supported?+

Ciphera supports any file type up to 500MB. Images, PDFs, zip archives, certificates, videos, documents — anything. Recipients can preview images and videos directly in the browser, or download any file type after decryption.

What is auto-send and how does it work?+

Auto-send lets you enter one or more recipient email addresses (one per line). After creating the secret, Ciphera sends each recipient an email containing the full secret link, QR code, and password if you set one. This is the safest way to share — the recipient gets everything they need directly in their inbox without you manually sending the link.

If I share manually, should I also send the password in the same message?+

No. If you set a password, send it through a different channel from the link. For example, share the link via email and the password via a phone call or text. Ciphera does not display the password on the share screen for manual sharing for this reason.

What does the QR code contain?+

The QR code encodes the full secret URL including the encryption key fragment. Scanning it gives the same access as clicking the link. Treat the QR code with the same care as the link itself.

Can the link be forwarded by the recipient?+

Yes — anyone with the link can access the secret until it expires or burns. This is why Ciphera recommends using the lowest view count appropriate for your needs and, where possible, sending to a specific person's email via auto-send rather than sharing a link openly.

Is Ciphera free to use?+

Yes, Ciphera is free to use with no account required. Advanced features may be introduced in future versions.

Who operates Ciphera?+

Ciphera is operated by STEVEDEV DIGITAL SERVICES, a business technology agency registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) of Nigeria.
